Essential for social workers and CASA workers.

Heartbreaking but in a meaningful way. This story of Ashley Rhodes-Courter is important for people to learn about, especially those working in the social services system. Foster care often gets a bad rap, and unfortunately, this book shows how many (not all!) foster parents game the system to make money. But even more egregious is the social service workers and case managers that don't follow up or follow protocol. Many of them made her personal situation worse out of case overload, genuine apathy, and turning a blind eye to serious shortcomings.

The book also illustrates the role of Guardian ad Litem volunteers or CASAs. I'm one and this helped me to feel like I need to take very seriously how I work for the child, digging deeper into not just what is said or reported but what ISN'T said.

It's corny to say children are our future but it's true. When you have a set up where the government will pay strangers to care for children rather than assist the actual, willing parents to do so, you have a problem. Sure, some parents have proved to fail their kids but some genuinely could make a success with a little help. Instead, by going to foster care, sometimes the kids get lost in the system.

This book seems slanted in no particular direction, and the pain is palpable. But it shows how valuable volunteers are to the system and how children appreciate when someone designated to help them is doing it out of a sense of community rather than a paycheck. If interested, there's much info on how to volunteer with foster kids, and you don't have to feel at odds with the foster family, but actually be a supportive influence as you speak for the child.

Lost in the shuffle

Yesterday, my laundry hamper was full to overflowing demanding attention as I opened this book. I had seen the author on Good Morning America, and this seemed like an interesting story.

As I started to read thoughts of laundry disappeared, as I was riveted by this compelling story, of a little girl who just wanted to be loved by her mother, or a family.

I could not put this book down until I finished.

It was like I was there looking on as she went through these various ordeals/ adventures.

If you are considering adopting or fostering a child, this book is a must. As you read, you will understand what these children have to go through. That understanding brings compassion. You will also understand what would be parents go through because both sides of the story are told effectively.

If you work in childcare services, this ought to be required reading.

If you are like me, this is an inspiring story about surviving and succeeding against the odds. You may notice this story has a mythical quality, reminiscent of other stories like Oliver Twist, a Roald Dahl story, or even Anne of Green Gables or Harry Potter which the author refers to, except this is for real.

It is shocking to me how a system which is designed to protect children, can fail so miserably at times. How is it possible for a home that is only licensed to have two children end up with 10. How come foster children end up living in a trailer? The children do not have a voice that is heard.

I particularly commend Gay Courter her adoptive mother who also persisted against the odds, where some adoptive parents would have given up. She ended up with a remarkable child who has written a remarkable book, who I feel sure will continue to be a voice for foster children, and orphans.

Moving tale of a messed up foster care program

Three Little Words is a moving tale of a foster program in distress. If ever there was a need for new policies and procedures, it is in this program. The fact that Ashley Rhodes-Courter became the person she is, is due to a remarkable set of adoptive parents and her own inner strength. The number of paid people who interacted with Ashley, and her brother Luke, is well over 100; yet Ashley admits, and the book details, the two who helped her the most were volunteers. This is a great example of how volunteering can impact the lives of others and a reason why none of us should be willing to leave anything up to the "system".

Bubbles are NORMAL!

That should be the title of this book! The author separates then documents the evolution, development, and finally, expiration of several technology bubbles, starting with the use of steam to power large mills in England in the late 1700s. Next came railroads, then steel, then mass production, and finally integrated circuits. Several subcycles can be identified in EACH major technology cycle--new technology (expensive but not widespread and largely self funded), the finance people see there is money to be made so start investing, they overinvest, a bubble bursts, financial carnage and major shifts in job and consumer markets occur, technology becomes cheaper as it becomes more widespread, finance people start to see successively smaller margins (profits that is) from that technology. A new technology is just starting to be developed, but the finance people don't see it and won't invest. Finally profits from the previous technology are all taken, the finance people wake up and see the potential to make profits from the new technology, the cycle repeats.

This Book is Simply a Modern Classic -- It's a Must Read

This book is a must-read. As someone who has been involved with computer/networking technology for over 30 years and high-tech finance for more than 20, I'm confident that there is nothing that surpasses this work in capturing the times in which we live. This book is simply a modern classic.

With this book in hand you will find yourself saying, "How could anyone have missed the Internet 'crash' of 2000?" Of course it had to happen. Then you will be asking yourself, "When will we get past the frenzied hype about these technologies so we can finally make all this really useful?" Just as Perez has been asking.

Throughout the 1980's and 1990's as a Wall Street analyst following technology companies, I regularly polled economists about the impact of computers and networks. At first there was no response. Later, we all began to hear about the "New Economy" and how everything had completely changed in economics. Yes, this was a pretty transparent attempt to rationalize stock valuations that had gone into orbit. In many ways it was even worse than no response at all.

It wasn't until I read Technological Revolutions and began to look into why mainstream economists have had so little to say about technology, that I learned there was a fight over all this in the 1930/40s. Many were involved but Harvard's Joseph Schumpeter who authored Business Cycles in 1938 putting technology at center stage- was among the losers. Future generations of economists rarely delved into Schumpeter's heterodoxy. Fortunately, Perez revives the Schumpeterian tradition with a powerful reinterpretation and combines economics and technology with a clear and convincing voice.

History is a pattern, not an endless repeating cycle but a distinct and discernable pattern. Perez has given us the outlines of that pattern, making all our jobs a great deal easier. Whether you're in the technology business or in finance or policy or just trying to make intelligent choices in a complicated world, you will benefit and learn from this book. What comes next is going to be important, on many levels, and understanding that in the past others successfully faced similar challenges - not just once but with each technological revolution -- should help to give us courage to face our own.

Technology and pulsating growth

Dr. Perez makes the very solid points that technology revolutions impart a pulsating character to economic growth. A technology revolution forms the basis for an "investment frenzy." When this has run its course, the economy faces a number of unpleasant possibilities, including serious recession, depression, and stagflation. The presence or absence of a technology-inspired investment boom is a crucial determinant of what result will follow from a given policy action. However, the state of technology is almost always ignored by policymakers. This may be a case wherein the lack of an easy way to deal with a problem leads to ignoring it.

I love Mary Higgins Clark books - this was surprising for me - I did not care for it - my only favorite was the Alvirah and Willy story. I really enjoy the Alvirah and Willy stories. These stories were to quick, I know they are short stories but I don't care for this style of writing from MHC. I like the suspense throughout all her other books - these were too quick, very odd and left me saying, "what? hmmmmmmmm...........okaaaaayy....."

“The Tell-Tale Purr.” is the strangest thing ever and made me sorry I wasted time reading it. One of the stories is familiar.

Mary's last few books, "Cinderella Murder, I've got you under my skin, etc. - Fabulous reads - terrific writing" On a good note, I will no longer waste time reading any short stories she puts out - just not my thing - I had trouble finishing each one - I normally sit down and will read her books in 2 to 3 days - this took me a while because there was just no interest, no pull whatsoever. If you look at my other reviews on MHC, I leave her 5 stars I'm giving 3 instead of 2 on this because of the Alvirah and Willy story.

I have always loved this author so when I saw the short stories I thought why not and I wasn't wrong Each story was different,some were better than others but each was unique. I enjoyed reading tis and highly recommend it ,it keeps you guessing and it was hard to put down.it was nice to be able to get something done In between stories.

I was disappointed in that the Title was only the first of numerous short stories and not the full mystery Clark usually writes. These short stories were OK, but not what I was expecting from one of my favorite authors.

The play that thrilled in 1995 may be even more relevant now.

"Skylight" won David Hare a shelf of awards in 1995. Now a new production is scorching London. It may come to New York with the London cast (Bill Nighy and Carey Mulligan). And, oh, it’s been filmed for broadcast in movie theaters in Great Britain and other countries.

Yeah, it’s that good.

You know Carey Mulligan because she was in “The Great Gatsby” and “Inside Llewyn Davis” and was nominated for an Academy Award for “An Education.” You know the lanky, floppy-haired Bill Nighy from many movies (“Love, Actually”) and "State of Play." As for David Hare, he’s a king of the English theater; he wrote “Plenty, “Pravda,” “The Blue Room” and Stuff Happens, and won Academy Award nominations for the screenplays of “The Reader” and “The Hours.”

Enough with credentials — what’s “Skylight” about?

Two people. In one room. For one night.

Shades of Samuel Beckett? More like George Bernard Shaw.

Tom Sergeant owns restaurants. He started small. He grew big — in his 50s, he’s rich. And, to his annoyance, he’s the pawn of the bankers who made him rich but loathe innovation and risk.

Kyra Hollis, who’s around 30, once worked for Tom. And more: she lived in his home. And more: she was close to Alice, his wife. And more: for six years, she and Tom had a secret affair. Alice found out. Kyra left that day. Now she lives in a dump and teaches poor kids at a school in a rough neighborhood.

Tom and Kyra haven’t seen one another for three years. Why does he show up now? Because Alice got cancer and, three years ago, died. Because he has no anchor. Because — but you know this — he wants Kyra to live with him.

Key fact: Margaret Thatcher left office in 1990. “Skylight” opened in 1995. Hare was no fan of Thatcher’s brand of conservative politics (think: Ronald Reagan). But — and this is also key — Tom is not a mouthpiece for Thatcherism. He’s a man in pieces, eager to reconnect with a woman who understands him, aggravated that she has changed for reasons he doesn’t understand at all.

The play is their conversation — really, their debate. And it’s not easy to score it. Is Tom a bully? Is Kyra’s idealism too good to be true? What is the obligation of the rich to the poor? Who are we to one another?

Some of the debate is political. (Kyra, on teaching the poor: “What does it matter why I do it? Why anyone goes out and helps? The reason is hardly of primary importance. If I didn’t do it, it wouldn’t get done.”) But more of it is personal, ranging from the inferiority of the cheese she now uses in her pasta to the morality of affairs that start in secret and remain that way.

“We know which side of the divide Mr. Hare comes down on,” Ben Brantley writes in the New York Times. “But it is to his credit, and to that of this nigh perfect production, that as long as we’re watching ‘Skylight,’ our sympathies are always torturously in flux. Be ready to cry. The thinking can happen later.”
