Good Read

I enjoyed this book It is a decent book all in all with a good moral lesson. Also very funny in some parts and very witty dialogue. I felt there was one chapter that described how Dorian became obsessed with all different art forms and it went into so much detail and was so annoying that I contemplated aborting the book. I read on and that chapter ended but based on the reviews I read, I felt that they never really got into the important details of how Dorian fell into decadence. Instead they just alluded to it in the past tense with little details where there should have been instead of that bad chapter.

Sketching has long been a best practice for designers. Through sketches, designers follow a generative process of developing, honing, and choosing ideas. Designers also use sketches to discuss, exchange, and critique ideas with others. One of a kind in it's field!

Over the past two years I've spent many evenings and weekends teaching myself everything I can about IA/UX/IxD and so have surveyed many of the books available. For the most part those books can be broken into two categories. The first are theory books (About Face 3, Information Architecture for the World Wide Web) and design pattern books (Designing Interfaces, Designing Web Interfaces) (Not to mention user research books but that's a whole different step of the process).

Unfortunately, I haven't found too many books that focus on the skills of sketching a user experience. I have read and worked through Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain and Visual Meetings but found the first was really focused on fine art sketching and the later is really focused on meetings and sharing general ideas with people. Sketching User Experiences is a good in between that focuses on the practical skills of sketching interfaces and experiences and communicating that to others.

The book starts with very basic sketching exercises and by the end gets into really fun and tangible advanced techniques. Some of the more advanced techniques I loved involve creating sketches from photos, creating hybrid sketches (photos + sketches) and building poster board prototypes of physical devices. Each exercise in the book is discrete and has a clear set of instructions, an explanation of how it fits into the user-centered design process and references to follow up with. Each exercise was structured enough that if you want to pick and choose things to do it's perfect for that.

All in all I would recommend this book for IA/UX/IxD professionals of all levels and anyone else who needs to communicate user experiences to others. I especially think this book would be useful for developers who are looking for a better way to express their ideas (or frustration) to clients, designers and other stakeholders because there is a big enough range of exercises that he should be able to find something that works.

The other place I would recommend this book would be for an advanced user interfaces undergrad/graduate level college course. There's enough work in here to make for a -really- fun semester's worth of work. I hope a professor picks this up and builds a course around it :)

Practical, good for even non-designers

I am not a designer - but have been reading a lot about design and this is by far one of the most practical books you will buy. Some of the techniques are practical and wil change the way you do wireframes. I guess these are commonplace techniques used by designers but for non-designers it just changes your perspective. This is a true workbook, so be prepared to spend time doing versus reading-you wont be disappointed especially if you are an engineer looking to learn design. It is not a book about principles of design (there are many books out there that do that), this is a book about practical, real world techniques.

Before reading this book I thought sketching is for the "creative designers", but the techniques here (take pictures, trace) make it really simple.

This is a superb book for anyone who deals in processes.

Especially for people who are and are not artists (as in everyone), this book presents using sketching for any project that requires innovation and multiple steps. In the first pages, it demonstrates that ideas can be expanded, discarded for something better, improved and entirely new approaches realized. While this is available in all disciplines, sketching is a good medium for capturing and exploring ideas from daily exposures. I'm thoroughly enjoying reading and using the ideas.

Jakes" is a compilation of wisdom and understanding gained from his many years of Christian ministry, his study of the scriptures, and his amazing insight into human nature.

The book is made up of 40 interactive devotionals which introduce the reader to wisdom for solving life's difficulties, addressing challenging new situations and learning how to make wise decisions.

Each chapter includes: a short introductory statement excerpted from an earlier published work of Jakes; a narrative story or illustrative material addressing the topic under consideration; thought provoking points to ponder; and words of wisdom drawn from the scriptures, Jakes own experiences, and from other well known Christian leaders; and a page for personal application in the form of an interactive journal entry.

I personally found the points to ponder provided thought provoking. The opportunity for journaling became especially beneficial. An excerpt from "Release Your Anointing" spoke to me. "Praying in the spirit allows you to come apart before coming apart... Like the disciples, you need a solitary place to rest awhile."

Bishop Jakes is an excellent writer and the author of a number of just great and timely books written for the spiritual growth of the Body of Christ. It so happens that the Lord has led me since the 1970's to read and study each day the Book of Proverbs. This book is the life's heart of this Man of God. It is just great! There are 40 topics of wisdom and I just love the fact that the book includes 'Points to Ponder' and pages for each reader to write their 'My Wisdom Keys'. It is a praise-wisdom book to all of us to read and re-read from this well-known Bishop,Teacher and Shepherd.

Do NOT Buy If You Were Planning On Using The Online Tools That Were Advertised As Included In The Item Description

Do not buy if you were planning on using the online tools that were advertised as included in the item description. The access code was missing from the front cover of the book even though the book text clearly stated that this was where the access code should be located. When I called customer service to inquire about where I could find the access code to view the online tools, I was told "you have a physical, paperback book, right? You don't need an online book." Clearly the customer service representative did not understand the difference between an online book and online tools even after I tried to explain the difference, so this person was of no help. If the access code for using online tools is not included with the book, then they should not include the following in their item description:

Online Access Code

I have no used this book yet but I'm taking it for an online class through my college. I was buying it electronically to get the online access code for my college class, but my college class uses a site called blackboard. Many of the colleges/universities use the blackboard platform for their classes. Well this class requires me to have the access code for blackboard. When I purchased this I didn't realize I couldn't use the online access code that amazon offers you on the blackboard platform. The online code is only for the publishers website, if you want the blackboard code you have to have it mailed to you from the publisher. I wish this was more clear on all ends because I went on a wild goose chase to try and find out what was going on with the code. I really didn't want to have to buy the actual book because I hate carrying around books and everything is offered through the online access code anyways.

Flash cards are NOT included.

Very disappointed. I ordered this book specifically for the flash cards and they weren't included. I called to figure out what the problem was and was told that it was a code I needed-not physical flash cards. Okay, fine. But they couldn't give me a code since it was used, so I had to return it and get a book from somewhere else because I needed it for a class. Very frustrated.

Romanian-born Constantin Brancusi (1876-1957) is one of the most important names in 20th-century sculpture. This book accompanies a major retrospective exhibition of Brancusi's scultpure, drawings, and photographs organized by the Philadelphia Museum of Art and the Centre Georges Pompidou, Paris. This work is illustrated throughout with photographs by the artist and images culled from a wide range of archival sources. The authors provide a detailed reassessment of Brancusi's work, incorporating and extending the revisions in scholarship that have been taking place since the last major retrospective in 1969-1970. The three major essays present information on such diverse issues as the sculptor's sources of inspiration, his formal approach, and the works' original presentation. Friedrich Teja Bach rejects the notion of Brancusi's oeuvre as hermetic, timeless and pure, and examines instead the heterogeneous combinations of form and material that make Brancusi's works compellingly paradoxical. Margit Rowell explores the sculptor's place in the artistic climate of Paris in the 1910s and 1920s and his rejection of dominant styles and subject matter in favour of non-Western sources, particularly Asian art. Ann Temkin traces the history of Brancusi's American patronage during his lifetime by such influential collectors as John Quinn, Katherine Dreier, James Johnson Sweeney, and Louise and Walter Arensberg. The plate section features full-colour reproductions of over 100 sculptures, with accompanying texts and visual references. In addition, 55 photographs by Brancusi in full-page duotone are shown alongside a major selection of his sculptures. There are also colour and black and white reproductions of over forty of his drawings - as well as prefatory essays on the photographs and drawings, a chronology, and bibliographic and exhibition listings.

Ethereal sculpture...

In the Sucevita Cloisters in Sucevita Romania a painted vault depicts a repeated rhomboid design in the shape of a pillar. Wooden funery columns in Loman Cemetery in Hunedoara, Transylvania, Romania also exhibit the rhomboidal design, albeit on a much more articulated, differentiated, and elaborate scale.
The Romanina artist, Constantin Brancusi brought the image of the rhomboid pillar to his wonderful sculpture the "Endless Column." For Brancusi, the rhomboid pillar was the embodiment of the "axis mundi", the world's axis, the tree of life, the pillar of the sky, the pivot of the universe. He once referred to these columns as stairways to heaven. Peoples all over the world have used the metaphysical pillar to link the earth and the sun, the source of all life.
The pillar image may not seem as fresh today as it did when arrived on the Paris art scene in the early 20th Century, but today, many art critics view the Romanian-born Parisian sculptor Brancusi as a major player in the Modern art movement. Along with Picasso, Brancusi introduced the notion of using traditional art forms in Western art--including 'totem' poles or sacred pillars, stone plinths, and other metaphysical carvings.
BRANCUSI was published by the Philadelphia Museum of Art in conjunction with a major retrospective of his work. Brancusi apparently deplored analytic attempts to understand his art (he felt his works should simply be "enjoyed" i.e. the fill the viewer with joy). However, the book is filled with material designed to help the reader "understand" and to a great extent, I feel it accomplishes it's goal.
The layout includes photographs showing how Brancusi may have found inspiration for his many birds, heads, and other organic and metaphysical works, including his rhomboidal columns. For example, one series of photographs shows Brancusi's famous "Muse" series executed in marble, bronze, and other media, and includes possible sources of inspiration such as a photograph and self-portrait of Margit Pogany. The various "Muse" may have evolved from a semi-formal bust similar to those executed by more traditional artists to a fully evolved "essence" of "head" more akin to Modern art.
I recommend this book to anyone who desires a pictoral record of the artist at work as well as many flat representations of his wonderfully formed three-dimensional sculptures and carvings.
