A Great Book for a Great Civilization!

This book is perhaps the most comprehensive guide to the world of the Phoenicians. Considering there are few books on this subject to begin with, there is not a great deal i can say in terms of how this is vastly different. If you've managed to find your way to this book, i highly recommend it.

This book has many advantages over others. Not least the fact that it's actually a compilation of the works and studies of a number of scholars. Among them are Sabatino Moscati, Maria Eugenia Aubet and others who have written extensively on this subject both directly and indirectly. The composition is such that it is often possible to identify regions of conflicting viewpoints. Though contradictory at times, this aspect is actually helpful in illustrating the present ambiguity with regards to many areas of the subject. A lost civilization in many respects, a great deal of cross-referencing is needed and this is where the book has a dinstict advantage. Particularly interesting is that the book draws from a variety of backgrounds so that the works of modern Cypriots, Italians, Arabs and Spanish are included. This aspect alone is enough to suggest that the book is without bias of any kind. This is not to say that it is manual of distinct essays, but rather a book with different scholars contributing to the many chapters.

The content is equally excellent. Here the Phoenicians are described from their Canaanite origins to the ventures of Hannibal. A true civilization with character and identity, they were far more than the great navigators of antiquity. The book clearly outlines everything from art and religion to trade and political institutions. Their ventures enabled them to contact and influence every known civilization one could name, and the book even goes as far as summarising their relationships with Greeks, Etruscans and Egyptians.

The book is overwhelming with detail, and has a good selection of coloured illustrations. I have read a number of books on this subject and this is definitely my favourite. For those who know nothing of this subject, i truely believe that the ancient world cannot be fully understood without some knowledge of this great civilization.

It's amazing how much of Phoenician culture is still around, much of it passed off as Asseryian or Roman or Egyptian. So much innovation and creativity lost to the historical victors during the greek and Roman conquests. Well covered in this anthology.

Great book

This book is a must for all coaches. It explains the Carolina system. Which history has proven has been a good system. The book explains alot. It answers questions that you have not even thought of yet. The special section by Bob Spear of the Air Force Academy was wonderful. It explained the shuffle offense to perfection. If you are a coach and looking for an offense to run, read this section on the shuffle. You will like this offense and all the variations that are well explained in this section. The one thing that could be explained more is the famed Carolina 4 corners. They could have discussed it more, and given more examples of how it works. That is the only negative of the book. The motion offense and it's rules are explained in great detail. If you are looking for a zone offense, take a look at the triple post offense. The different defenses are explained very well. Smith's famous run and jump defenses are diagrammed and explained in great detail, along with their other defenses This book shows you how you can set up your style for your team. I am constantly referring back to this book during the season.

Team Improved with this Book

I have always been a fan of Roy Williams who knows well the system of Dean Smith. So, by default, I am a fan of Coach Smith. Previous reviews have aptly explained the features of the book but I wanted to focus on an aspect that directly led to my team winning more games over the past two years.
Described in the book is a statistical chart that Smith used to check his team's productivity taking into account the results of possessions. Every time your shooting percentage is high and your free throw attempts are high, you win. (obviously) But the chart comares your success to the opponent. Even in a win by 4 points, my team's productivity was less than the opponent. Tournovers were too high. We were giving away possessions. I presented this information to the players and they could see with their own eyes the data. We "threw away" possessions that didn't yeild shots. Players can be told about taking care of the ball; players can watch their mistakes on game film. But this formula rating their points per possession seemed to drive the message home. (by the way, the second time we faced the team be beat by 4, we won by 20 and had 2 turnovers. Their focus was so much higher)

Claire McKenzie, narrator of this taut, provocative novel, wonders not only "what happened to Lani Garver" but about who and what Lani is. When Lani shows up on Hackett Island, neither Claire nor her cheerleader friends can tell if Lani is male or female (Asked if he's a girl, he says, "Oh! No. Not a girl. Sorry"). Claire has been hiding much of her identity, too: she conceals her electric guitar and the bloody lyrics she writes, and she doesn't tell her friends or her alcoholic mother that she suspects her leukemia has returned. When Lani finds her fainting, he pries her secrets out of her, then takes her to a hospital where she can get tested without parental consent. They bond, a bit quickly, as he helps her face her "hidden garbage," (among other things, her recent ill health is due to an eating disorder). When an orderly tells her about androgynous "floating angels," spiritual beings that help people in need, the discussion plants a question in Claire's mind, and as odd events continue, she skates close to asking if Lani might be one of those angels. Plum-Ucci's talent is such that readers will share rather than dismiss Claire's curiosity. The climactic scene, in which the boys kidnap Lani and Claire and take them to the docks, crackles with suspense. Even if not always convincing, the plotting exerts a sure grip, commanding the imagination well past the final page. Ages 14-up.

Grade 9 Up-Claire McKenzie, 16, is a cheerleader, musician, and leukemia survivor. She's haunted by dreams, day and night, that her cancer is back. She secretly writes music with lyrics inspired by dark visions of girls who cut themselves with razors and watch themselves bleed. Her friend Macy is controlling, but she helps Claire feel "normal." Lani Garver enters the picture as a new student at their high school. With his porcelain skin, high cheekbones, longish bob, and seductive walk, it is hard to be sure if he's a guy or a girl. Claire's friends decide that he is gay. He is intelligent and worldly wise and is the one person to whom Claire can talk about her darkest dreams and fears. He seems incapable of not speaking the truth even when his life depends on it. Plum-Ucci also introduces magical elements into the story through Lani's philosophical reflections on Andovenes' Angels, and Claire's growing speculation that her new friend may indeed be a floating angel. She discovers who she is, in the face of unbelievably strong peer pressure, and the determination to decide what is real and what is not. Prejudice, homophobia, friendship, tolerance, individuality, and the possibility that something spiritually bigger than all of us rules this universe are wonderfully woven into this powerfully told story. Outstanding writing, strong characterization, and riveting plot development make this title rise above many recent coming-of-age stories.

love the concept but very triggering for trans / lgbt readers i think

honestly i really wanted to like this book it had been recommended to me by a friend but just wanna say this book might be traumatizing to trans folks interested in reading it, i had to put it down and couldn't finish it, the narrator is cis and the character lani isn't necessarily trans but def gender non conforming and often described in really horrible ways by the cis characters even narrator who is supposed to be a friend, unless you're interested in another traumatizing story about a kid who feels like it could be you being murdered by a bunch of cis devils stay away, also the writing is fairly racist at multiple times specifically towards native folks that were just extra traumatizing.

A great story about a cancer survivor and a horrible story about a gender variant individual

What happened to Lani Garver is a really good book about a cancer survivor and a really bad book about a gender variant individual. I will give this book the highest praise I possible can, I didn't write yesterday because I was so wrapped up in finishing this book.

First the good part. The main character, Claire missed a year and half of junior high because she was battling Leukemia. She's in remission and back on Hackett Island for high school. She hopes to put the past behind her and just be a normal kids. There's two small problems with this idea. First off she's got a huge pile of emotional issues she hasn't dealt with. Secondly the kids she is trying to fit in with are way to innocent and naive, and not in a good way.

The crowd that Claire is running with aren't a cute cuddly sort of innocent. They are dangerously reckless and selfish sort of innocent. Her cheerleading friends are mean and selfish and attention seeking. They all want to get with the boys of the "fish frat". The fish frat are sons of the local fishermen. During the tourist seasons they work as lifeguards. They are all big hunky brutes who drink too much and play dangerous macho games of chicken.

There is a legend on Hackett sound that if an Indian Summer falls in November it will mean a curse. Claire doesn't believe that but this particular Indian Summer she is getting dizzy and fears the cancer is back.

Into this walks Lani Garver. Lani Garver is so ambiguous that at first no one at school is even sure if he's a boy or a girl. Lani won't help them out much either. He claims to hate boxes, including boxes like boy/girl gay/straight.

Claire starts out trying to be nice to Lani. The tables are quickly turned and it is Lani who must be nice, and help Claire. He helps her sneak away to Philidephia to be tested at a free clinic for cancer, so her parent's don't find out. The more she learns about this mysterious run away, the more questions it raises. A strange conversation with a medic at the clinic about how angels have no gender leaves her wondering if Lani is even human.

To the rest of Hackett Island, and to her old friends in fish frat, the question of Lani is easily answered. He is an effeminate gay boy. As a closet homophobe ramps up the gay bashing, Claire watches in horror as her 'friends' choose the convenient answer (that he brings it on himself) over the truth.

It's a wonderfully written book that really sucks you in. It is powerful and moving. For Claire it is a story of hope and healing, for Lani it is a brutal reminder of just how hard it can be to be different in our society. Overall I would say it's a great book and should be read in every high school. Maybe the world would become a better place.

original spin on old tale

This book uses issues like gay bashing, eating disorders and peer pressure to explore what is essentially a tale of sin and redemption. The teens in this book speak like they do in Hollywood movies, all self-consciously "hip" and snide. It seems like the author tries to shanghai an example of "teenspeak" such as "wild and happy parade of the teeth going" or "rule the cule" onto every page, and this makes it an awkward read. Most of the time, today's teens speak like everyone else, at least the ones I know, though of course they have their own catch-phrases.
The characters also seem strangely young at times. I doubt kids who are partying hard every week night insult people by remarking on their imaginary "boogers." That insult belongs in elementary school, at least when I was young. Adolescent girls are a little more sophisticated in their barbs by high school.
This was an original take on bullying, though, with several characters who were strikingly well-developed and did not fit into any "box" to quote one. I wish, however, the author hadn't tried to tie everything up in the final chapter. It reminded me of those movies where we get explanations of what happened to every character at the end, even the minor ones we could care less about (Like "Loser") I think a little come-uppance is great, but when cosmic justice is too neat (like this book) it erodes some of the believability that the author has worked so hard to create...

Inclusion: A Very Practical Guide

Chris Boyle makes big claims in his introduction to the text. I've read many texts that claim to provide both a theoretical background and a practical approach to successful inclusion, so I was a little sceptical. I must say, though, that this is a great resource. The chapters, especially the one by Roger Slee, are engaging, and the third section on 'Overcoming barriers to successful inclusion' actually provides very clear and accessible practical information.

What works in inclusion: An ideal mix of theory and practice

From the outset, Boyle and Topping claim this book has `no rival publication' in the field of inclusive education. As an educator and research student working in this area I was cynical, however after reading the book I agree it has much to offer educators and researchers alike.
The first section focuses on theories of inclusive education and challenges the reader to think beyond what the term `inclusion' has come to mean. The chapters by Topping and Slee I found particularly interesting, with the concepts of social inclusion and human rights, and exclusion discussed respectively. The next section provides practical ideas for the implementation of inclusive practices, both at the classroom and whole school level. There are ideas that can be taken away and implemented immediately (such as the Student Log offered by Ashman), and others to be thought and talked about, before being developed into everyday classroom and school-wide practices (collaborative practices discussed by both Boyle and Deppeler). The final section acknowledges the challenges of inclusion faced everyday in our classrooms and schools, and provides some practical ideas to deal with the things we can control, such as differentiating the curriculum, and provides hope for those that we cannot.
The book concludes with a challenge for the reader to go away and `actually do something different'. The concepts and ideas discussed by the contributors left me with the desire and confidence to not only make some changes in my classroom and school practices, but to reflect upon and reconceptualise aspects of my understandings about inclusive education.

The third edition of Haskell: The Craft of Functional Programming is essential reading for beginners to functional programming and newcomers to the Haskell programming language. The emphasis is on the process of crafting programs and the text contains many examples and running case studies, as well as advice on program design, testing, problem solving and how to avoid common pitfalls.

Revisions to this new edition include new material on testing and domain-specific languages and a variety of new examples and case studies, including simple games. Existing material has been expanded and re-ordered, so that some concepts - such as simple data types and input/output - are presented at an earlier stage. The running example of Pictures is now implemented using web browser graphics as well as lists of strings.

The book uses GHCi, the interactive version of the Glasgow Haskell Compiler, as its implementation of choice. It has also been revised to include material about the Haskell Platform, and the Hackage online database of Haskell libraries. In particular, readers are given detailed guidance about how to find their way around what is available in these systems.

An accompanying web site supports the book, containing all the program code, further teaching materials and other useful resources.

Simon Thompson is Professor of Logic and Computation in the School of Computing at the University of Kent. His research and teaching interests include functional programming and logical aspects of computer science. Simon has written three other books: Erlang Programming (co-authored with Francesco Cesarini), Miranda: The Craft of Functional Programming and Type Theory and Functional Programming.

About the Author

Simon Thompson is a Senior Lecturer in Computer Science at the University of Kent. His research and teaching interests include functional programming and logical aspects of computer science.

Best Haskell introduction out there, but there are some flaws.

1. very well explained with many pictures and examples.
2. based on Haskell 2010(third edition)

Cons :

Learning Haskell is like learning C. Many of the language features are really easy, but some key features are challengeable.

When learning C, most of syntax/semantics except arrays and pointers can be learnt within few days, or even hours. But then, you would have hard time to master pointers, arrays and memory management, etc.

Haskell is not that different. Basic arithmetic, functions, types, pattern matching, guards and even recursions, you could learn in short time. But type classes, lambdas(especially, those reductions) are a bit harder and finally, monads can be very frustrating.

I am generally satisfied with the contents of the book, but his explain about lambdas and monads is a bit sparely. I think, he worried about to introduce mathematics(especially, lambda calculus and category theory). But, the functional languages are different than those imperative languages, in that its root is pure mathematics. They have a small set of simple yet powerful rules, which enables many neat tricks, and many of the tricks actually come from mathematical thinking. When you want to fully understand and to use the functional languages properly, basic theories are somewhat unavoidable. Actually, you don't need to know such as undecidability, model theory or constructive logic, etc. but the basics of (untyped-/typed-)lambda calculus(especially those of reductions, evaluation orders and some of their theorems), category theory(monad is a bit hard here, because it lies in the deep sea of category theory, but functors, for example, can be easily explained) is very helpful for thinking about higher order things and its practical use. Also, you don't need so much effort to learn only the basics of them. Without that they are explained sufficiently, the tutorial is teaching only the subset of Haskell.

Don't get me wrong, this book is the most nearly complete Haskell introductory text out there with the support of Haskell 2010. I wrote the insufficient parts, because it could be the 'complete' introduction to Haskell, when the author didn't avoid the whole theory parts. And since I have read his "Type Theory & Functional Programming", I have an impression that he can present the theories easily understandable. When this part is supplemented, it can be compared to the legendary (and most complete) "C programming : A modern approach" by K.N.King in Haskell world.

So, despite of the cons, I'll give 5 stars, because it is actually much better than other Haskell books.

Good first read of Haskell

It is more attuned to a university student rather than a software professional trying to learn Haskell.
"Learn You a Haskell For Great Good!", I feel is a better first book for the software professional.
But both books are excellent.
Finally, I wish one of the Haskell authors would give a pragmatic description of Category Theory.
Category Theory is a "tough nut" to crack.

About the Author
Doug Bradley first appeared as Pinhead in the 1987 horror masterpiece Hellraiser, and has continued to play the role in a series of successful movies (the latest instalments, Deader and Hellworld, are due for release in 2004). Other film and TV appearances include starring in Barker's Nightbreed and alongside Robert Englund (A Nightmare on Elm Street's Freddy) in The Killer Tongue, and a role in the recent BBC2 dramatisation The Private Life of Samuel Pepys, alongside Steve Coogan.

Read it anyway

It's a shame that this book is probably destined to have a very limited cult audience. It's written by Pinhead, and if you don't like the "Hellraiser" series you'd probably tend to just skip it. I wouldn't blame you, but you shouldn't.

If I have one complaint it's that the "history of the mask" portion at the beginning seems sort of tacked on as if Mr. Bradley felt he needed scientific or psychological justification for writing a book. If that is the case, he needn't have worried. This thing is chock full of hilarious behind-the-scenes anecdotes about great horror actors old and new, including Mr. Bradley, written with dry self-deprecating British wit. It's like spending the day with Doug Bradley, and I laughed my way through the entire thing.

I would recommend it to anyone that is curious about how film sets work and how actors cope with prosthetics, or to anyone that just loves movies. Don't worry, there's no torture or hell-raising, and it won't give you nightmares.

And I'm ready for a sequel please, Mr. Bradley. I'm sure there's more where this came from...

great horror fan read

I checked this out of the local library a few months ago and thoroughly enjoyed it. Not only does Mr. Bradley fill this enjoyable book with enjoyable anecdotes about his career as Pinhead, he gives a history of make-up in Hollywood during the golden age with innovaters such as Jack Pierce and Lon Chaney. This is a great book for not just fans of the Hellraiser movies, but of the horror genre as a whole and anyone fascinated with the history of make-up and prosthetics in movie. A very interesting and quick read!

A Great Book For Fans of Doug Bradley

Masks have been used in religious rites, theatrical productions, and movies. In this book Doug Bradley, better known as Pinhead from Hellraiser, delves into the world of makeup and masks. The book is structured chronologically beginning with a historical view of masks that moves on to the classic horror movie actors; Lon Chaney, Boris Karloff, Lon Chaney Jr., and Christopher Lee to name a few. He also interviewed several newer horror film actors including Robert England and the many stuntmen who have played Jason and Michael Myers. He sprinkles here and there memories from his own career and then ends the book with chapters devoted to his work on Hellraiser.

It was interesting to find out how the movie make up was applied and the hardships that the actors went through. It truly seemed to transform them into different people. Boris Karloff endured a lot to create his beloved monster, so much so that he helped to establish the Screen Actors Guild so that actors have a voice when it comes to harsh treatment on film sets.

I am not a fan of Pinhead. I read this book because I am a fan of the classic horror films from Universal and Hammer Studios. Except for a very interesting chapter at the beginning on the history of mask use in the theater and the chapters on older monster film legends, this book was disappointing. Bradley is a good writer and he kept my attention throughout the book, but it is geared toward the fans of Bradley’s work and I am not a fan. If you like both the older and newer horror films especially the films of Doug Bradley then you will enjoy this book much more than I did.

Yeah, I got exactly what I expected out of this Graphic Novel. The anime follows it very closely. The art work is great and the story is even better. If you're a true Naruto fan, you have to buy this!

Simply Solid

This is the second volume following the 2 year gap after the fight between Sasuke and Naruto and I must say that this series keeps on moving. I originally watched most of it in the original Japanese with subtitles, and although there has been some deviations in translation, the series is still highly entertaining and incredibly imaginative. I find myself racing out to pick up every new volume and I cannot wait till the next volume comes out.

In many ways, Volume 29 can be described as a series of smaller battles in preparation for some major confrontations. Kikashi and Naruto take on Itachi and Guy and his team battle Kisame. All of this takes place while the Akatsuke start extracting the fox spirit from Gaara's body.

For Naruto fans, this is a great volume, one that will leave you itching for more.

For a used book, this book was actually in great condition. The description says there might be highlights or underline markings but none were found in my book. The only complaint I have is that the book was curved one way as if it was forced into a small mailbox. Other than that, the book is in great condition. If you are trying to collect this series, this is a good way to save money because it is half the price of a new book at a book store. The only con is that if you are trying to collect them in really good condition, this might not be for you. If you get a new Naruto manga book, it will have a smooth/ oily texture. The texture on this book felt rough. Other than that, for a used book this is amazing.
